Ashley National Forest surrounds Flaming Gorge with dozens of developed campgrounds at elevations between 6,000 and 8,400 feet. Deer Run Campground sits five miles from The Pinnacle along the reservoir shoreline with shaded sites and direct water access. Cedar Springs Campground near the dam offers stunning canyon views from every site. Antelope Flat Campground, 15 minutes south of Manila, provides a quieter setting with vault toilets and fire rings. Most Forest Service campgrounds open mid-May through September depending on snowpack. Reservations through Recreation.gov are recommended for summer weekends. If you prefer a roof overhead after a day outdoors, The Pinnacle is just minutes from every trailhead and boat ramp in the area.
Water Activities
Beyond fishing and boating, Flaming Gorge Reservoir offers water skiing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, and kayaking across 42,000 acres of clean, clear water. The reservoir surface temperature reaches the mid-60s by July, comfortable enough for swimming at sandy coves near Antelope Flat and Lucerne Valley Marina. Kayakers and canoeists can explore the narrow upper reaches of the gorge where red canyon walls tower hundreds of feet above the waterline. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available at the marinas during peak season from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The Pinnacle at Flaming Gorge puts you five miles from the nearest boat launch, so you can be on the water within minutes of leaving your room.
Historical Attractions
Flaming Gorge Dam stands 502 feet above the Green River and was completed in 1964 as part of the Colorado River Storage Project. The Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center, operated by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, offers free guided tours of the dam interior where you can walk through the power plant tunnels and learn how the structure generates hydroelectric power for the region. Nearby, the Swett Ranch Historic Site preserves a working homestead from the early 1900s along the scenic byway between Manila and Dutch John. The Sheep Creek Geological Loop features exposed rock formations spanning 600 million years, with interpretive signs explaining each visible layer along the 13-mile drive.
Winter Activities
When snow blankets the Uinta Mountains, Flaming Gorge transforms into a winter recreation destination. Snowmobilers ride groomed trails through Ashley National Forest with access points along Highway 44 between Manila and the Wyoming border. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers use the same forest roads for quiet backcountry exploration through pine and aspen groves. Ice fishing draws anglers to the frozen reservoir from December through March, targeting lake trout and burbot through the ice near Lucerne and Antelope Flat. The Manila area typically receives 40 to 60 inches of snowfall per season with temperatures dipping into the single digits overnight. The Pinnacle stays open year-round, giving winter visitors a warm base with heated rooms just minutes from every trailhead.
Adventure Sports
The Green River below Flaming Gorge Dam serves up Class I through Class III rapids ideal for whitewater rafting and kayaking through Red Canyon. Several licensed outfitters in Dutch John, eight miles east of Manila, run guided half-day and full-day float trips from late May through September. The sandstone cliffs along the reservoir and throughout the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area offer rock climbing routes for intermediate and advanced climbers, with bolted sport routes near the dam overlook area. Mountain biking trails lace the ridgelines above the gorge, including the Dowd Mountain and Death Valley Loop trails with panoramic views at every turn. ATV and side-by-side rentals are available locally for exploring the network of forest roads in Daggett County.
Local Events
Manila and the surrounding Daggett County communities host events throughout the year that draw visitors from across Utah and Wyoming. Flaming Gorge Days, held each June, features live music, a fishing derby, craft vendors, and family activities along the reservoir shoreline. The Daggett County PRCA Rodeo in Manila brings professional cowboys and cowgirls to town every summer with bull riding, barrel racing, and team roping under the Uinta Mountain skyline. Fall brings hunting season and the annual Flaming Gorge fishing tournaments targeting trophy lake trout and kokanee salmon. During winter holidays, the Manila community hosts tree-lighting celebrations and local gatherings. Check the Daggett County events calendar or ask at The Pinnacle front desk for schedules during your stay.
